Brief Summary of 1919 to 1936 Minutes Books

In the ‘twenties and thirties’ the Club made steady progress, thanks to the sterling efforts of several key members.

The Club played in the Blackburn Sunday School League under the name Salesbury St Peter’s Cricket Club.  By 1922, if not earlier, the Club had enough players to be able to field a Second Eleven.

This period saw the construction of a Pavilion (1922) (assuming that one may not have existed previously), a Refreshment Hut (1926) and the installation of railings along ‘all four sides’ of the ground (1933).

On a number of occasions, members were exhorted to make an effort to support the relatively small group of loyal and dedicated members.  This issue was discussed in 1931 as a serious matter of Club morale, there being at the time, insufficient funds to pay the groundsman’s fees.

It is apparent that quite frequently difficulties were experienced in respect of finding suitable people to serve as ‘groundsman’ on a remuneration basis.

The records of meetings indicate that the successful efforts of the ‘Entertainments Committee’ were crucial for the Club’s finances. Events included an annual New Year’s Eve Whist Drive and Dance, with evidence of strong support for this on at least one occasion, by the limit on ticket sales being set at 200 – with ‘no money taken on the door’.

A match against the ladies (1921) was played for the benefit of the Wilpshire Nursing Association.

Evidence exists of a growing interest in batting/bowling practice sessions, which on occasions apparently strayed onto the match-day wicket. At one time, this resulted in the groundsman being given authority to ban practice in the event of the ground being too wet.

Friday evening practice activities were limited to areas at least 50 yards from the match wicket zone. In 1929 four practice pitches were created on the ground adjacent to the Common Land.

In 1926 the 2nd XI won the Blackburn Sunday School Second Division Championship for the third consecutive season.

A policy of placing railings around the match-day wicket after each match was introduced in 1930.

A proposal (1923) to seek membership of the North East Lancashire League had been defeated, but in 1926 the Committee agreed to apply for membership of the North East Lancashire Cricket League on the understanding of continuation of enforcement of the previous practice that players should continue to have attended either the school or church in Salesbury.  The application was successful.

In 1929 the 1st XI won the North East Lancashire League title.

The first records of the Clayton Cup Competition appear in 1930 involving the following teams: Mellor, Ramsgreave, Ribchester, Langho, Clayton-le-Dale, Salesbury, Balderstone, Nomads, Wilpshire.

In 1933 a decision was made to purchase of either a ‘Greens’ or ‘Ransome’ motor mower, and efforts made to obtain a roller and sightscreen.

The creation of Vice Presidents was agreed in 1933.

CRICKET LEAGUES

1994     Joined Ribblesdale Cricket League

2023     Became a Founder Member of North West Cricket League through merger of Ribblesdale League and Bolton League

In 1993, the Club, in considering its future, decided that the time had come to leave the Chorley and District League, with the Ribblesdale League and the Palace Shield as the alternatives. The Chorley and District League was informed of the Club’s intentions and applications were submitted to both the Ribblesdale League and to the Palace Shield.  The Ribblesdale League’s offer of admission in 1994 to its 1st, 2nd and 3rd Division Leagues was accepted by the Club and the application to the Palace Shield accordingly withdrawn.

The 1st XI won the 1st Division Championship in 1995, just one year after joining the League.

In 1993, the Club declined an invitation from the Ribblesdale League to enter a Junior team to a Junior League which they were trying to form, in the belief that the standard would be lower than that of the Chorley and District Junior League.

Participation in the Village Knock out Competition continued in 1994.

Potential playing member shortages foreseen in 1994, led to the placing of an advertisement   in the Evening Telegraph for new players.  In 1996, the Club had serious concerns about the possibility of not being able to field a 2nd XI, without the influx of new players, but in the end such a major setback did not occur.

After a very successful season in  2002, the Club’s request to join the Ribblesdale Senior League was rejected, but shortly afterwards entry gained.
